When I was illustrating full time a few years ago now this type of picture was my "stock-in-trade", as I trained initially as a figurative book illustrator, I naturally gravitated towards this particular area. Needless to say it's not the easiest area to specialise in as the human form looks instantly wrong if incorrectly drawn in the first place, whereas something like an animal can be quite forgiving if your draughtmanship is a little off on the day!
Painted in watercolour and highlighted in bodycolour (gouache) onto 'Saunders Waterford Watercolour paper (300gsm) hot pressed'. This was my particular weapon of choice where art substrates were involved as the surface coped well with some rough handling and you're able to scratch back into it with scalpels and the like. The size of the painting by the way is that of a standard paperback book (around 8" x 5").
