Taken from a section of a fantastic and emotive painting by Jean-François Millet, "The Sower" is a work full of life and again a snapshot of 19th century France.
Millet was born into a family of poor peasant farmers near Cherbourg, France in 1814. His early work was that of conventional portraits and fashionable Landscape scenes prevalent at the time. But it was "the human side" of life that held the greatest attraction pictorally for him. In 1849 he moved to Barbizon in the Seine-et-Marne Department in North-Central France, where he remained and painted for the rest of his life.
Drawn in a very soft pencil onto cartridge to give maximum effect and feeling, I've always loved the relationship of lights against darks (chiaroscuro), sometimes the darker the picture the more intense the feeling. Prints are available upon request, just please drop me a line if you are at all interested via the 'Contact us' from the drop down menu above.
