The Sanctuary Knocker - Oil Pastel
The Sanctuary Knocker - Oil Pastel

.
The beautiful Durham Cathedral is a World Heritage Site and within a couple of miles from home here. It has stood majestically on the banks of the River Weir for nearly the 900 years, and is also the home to the shrine of St. Cuthbert. On the northern door to the Cathedral is the extremely dramatic Sanctuary Knocker. For those people who ‘had committed a great offence’, they could rap on the knocker and would be given an automatic 37 days of sanctuary within the confines of the Cathedral, in which time to try and resolve their problems.

‘The Sanctuary Knocker’, painted in oil pastels, was a commission piece for ‘Derwent Art Materials’ in Cumbria, the preparatory pencil work for the piece is shown within the ’Drawing & Sketching’ section on my website.
