This beautiful proposed garden bridge that will span the Thames between Temple and the South Bank is the brainchild of Joanna Lumley, along with Boris Johnson and Architects Thomas Heatherwick. It will be “a chance to walk through woodlands, over one of the greatest rivers in the world”, “for commuters”, as Joanna Lumley eloquently puts it. “It will provide a quick and beautiful route…for dreamers, a quiet place to linger among trees and grasses to look at the views” she goes on to say.
Far too often bridges are purely functional, a means to get from point A to point B, over an expanse. Whether this is on a vehicle carrying arch across, or a pedestrian only construction, rarely offering the chance to linger and enjoy the experience. Whilst not a new idea, in fact 1996 saw the Royal Academy run an ideas competition for a habitable bridge at the same location, this sadly never came to fruition. Joanna Lumley has been lobbying mayors for this to happen at least since 2002 with then mayor, Ken Livingstone.
My painting is 40” x 20” (102cm x 51cm approx) and painted in oils on primed board, offering the depth of colour, I couldn’t achieve in any other medium.
